Leica Leitz Phone 3: Signature Camera with 1-inch Sensor and Noctilux Simulation Launched

Leica’s most recent annual report had already made reference to a new Leitz Phone, and now the Leitz Phone 3 is official. Although the camera flagship has a redesigned appearance with much softened corners, it still offers many of the Leitz Phone 2’s functions.

Based on the Sharp Aquos R8 Pro, which debuted in May 2023, is the Leitz Phone 3. Starting with the 6.6-inch Sharp IGZO OLED screen, which offers a resolution of 2,730 x 1,260 pixels, a frame rate of 240 Hz, and a brightness of 2,000 nits, the features are still uncommon even in 2024. Leica comes with 512 GB of flash memory and 12 GB of RAM installed. With a microSD memory card, you may increase the storage capacity to 1 TB.

The huge, circular camera module on the back only has a single camera, which is outfitted with a 47.2 MP sensor in 1-inch format and a Leica lens with an f/1.9 aperture and 35 mm equivalent focal length of 19 mm. The selfie camera, which has a 12.6 megapixel f/2.2 focal length, is located in the centre punch-hole.

The Leitz Phone 3’s unique feature is its camera app, which comes with a redesigned, optional Leica watermark, proprietary filters, and a user interface designed by Leica. With the ability to choose the simulated aperture, these so-called “Leitz Looks” are made to resemble the Noctilux-M 1:1.2/50 mm, Summilux-M 1:1.1.4/28 mm, and Summilux-M 1:1:1.4/35. Among other things, these filters change how highlights appear, vignetting looks, and bokeh looks. On the other side, Leica colours with a more contemporary appearance are offered by Leica Vivid and Leica Enhanced.

The Leitz Phone 3’s casing is waterproof due to its IP68 certification. You have two options for charging the 5,000 mAh battery: wireless charging or USB-C. The Leitz Phone 3 boasts a 3.5 mm headphone socket, an NFC chip, a fingerprint sensor built right into the display, and compatibility for Bluetooth 5.3 and Wi-Fi 6.

Prices and availability

The Leitz Phone 3, like its predecessor, will only be sold in Japan. It will go on sale there on April 19 for an undisclosed amount.
