Caitlin Clark of Iowa wins with her 13th triple-double

At Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa, senior guard Caitlin Clark recorded her 13th career triple-double on Thursday as the No. 4 Hawkeyes defeated Loyola Chicago 98-69 to wrap up their non-conference schedule.

With 35 points, 17 rebounds, and 10 assists, Clark—the Division I scoring leader this season (30.5 PPG) and the top player in ESPN.com’s most recent Top 25 players ranking—had a balanced game. There are only four other games in Division I women’s basketball history where a player has recorded three triple-doubles with at least 35 points; this is her third.

With at least 35 points, 15 rebounds, and 10 assists, it was the second triple-double in Division I women’s basketball history. Cornelia Gayden of LSU did the other in 1995. Sabrina Ionescu of Oregon is the all-time Division I leader in triple-doubles, having recorded 26 between 2016 and 2020.

With 3,114 points, Clark also moved up to seventh position on the NCAA all-time scoring list. She overtook Rachel Banham of Minnesota (3,093 points from 2011-2016) and Jerica Coley of Florida International (3,107 from 2010-2014) with her performance on Thursday.

In the scoring list, Des Moines native Lorri Bauman, who scored 3,115 points at Drake from 1980 to 1984, will be surpassed by Clark with two more points. Clark was raised in West Des Moines, Iowa. Kelsey Plum of Washington is the all-time leader in the NCAA with 3,527 points earned between 2013 and 2017.

Clark led both teams in points, rebounds, and assists for the ninth time in her career; she is just one point away from tying Stanford’s Nicole Powell (2000–04) for the most such games by a player since the 1999–2000 campaign.

At this point, Iowa is 1-0 in the Big Ten and 12-1 overall. The Hawkeyes’ next game is against Minnesota on December 30.

In women’s basketball on Thursday, Clark wasn’t the only player to record a triple-double. With 26 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists, Hannah Hidalgo of Notre Dame recorded the highest-scoring triple-double in Irish history. In the ESPN.com Top 25 player rankings, Hidalgo is ranked No. 10.
