For OF Jesse Winker and INF Abraham Toro, the M’s acquire 2B Kolten Wong from the Milwaukee Brewers

The teams made the announcement that the Seattle Mariners acquired Milwaukee Brewers second baseman Kolten Wong on Friday in exchange for outfielder Jesse Winker and infielder Abraham Toro.

ESPN was informed by people with knowledge of the deal that Milwaukee will also give the Mariners approximately $1.75 million in cash.

After acquiring outfielder Teoscar Hernández in a deal, Seattle acquired the 32-year-old Wong as its second trade acquisition during the winter. In 2022, Wong, who won the Gold Glove twice, hit.251/.339/.430 and hit a career-high 15 home runs for the Brewers. In November, Milwaukee acquired a $10 million option on him and had multiple suitors.

“Second base is really an area that we’ve struggled to get production out of, particularly offensively,” Seattle general manager Justin Hollander said. “His game really seems to be trending upward year after year offensively, particularly against right-handed pitching. He’s learning to elevate the ball. He makes a ton of contact.”

The 29-year-old Winker and the 25-year-old Toro will be traded to the Brewers. Winker had been the centerpiece of a six-player deal that Seattle had signed in March. He had left knee surgery after the season and struggled to find the power stroke he had displayed in 2021, hitting.219/.344/.344 for the Mariners. In 2023, he will earn $8.25 million.

“A lot of our players in our mix who have a lot of flexibility — you guys know that we value that very much as a franchise,” Brewers president of baseball operations Matt Arnold said. “Having added depth across the entire infield is something that we feel really good about.”

At the end of the 2021 season, Seattle made a deal for Toro and traded relievers Joe Smith and Kendall Graveman to Houston in exchange for Toro. Eugenio Suarez, who Seattle acquired in the Winker deal, replaced Toro at third base. In 2022, Toro hit.185/.239/.324, mostly at second and third. He has just started arbitration.

This offseason, the Brewers traded Wong and outfielder Hunter Renfroe, both of whom are one year away from signing free agency. According to sources, earlier versions of the deal with Seattle included a third team, opening the door for Winker to be traded once more.

This year, Seattle went 90-72 and made the postseason for the first time in 20 years. Milwaukee went 86-76 and finished one game behind Philadelphia, which won the National League pennant, for the final wild card spot.
